What is overthinking and why does it happen

Overthinking: Overthinking refers to excessive thinking. Many of us have this problem, who think excessively about something. It refers to a type of mental problem where a person is preoccupied with excessive thoughts about something in their past or what might happen in the future, which causes the person’s mental stress. And this leads to a deterioration in their mental state.

What are the causes of overthinking?

Overthinking is a problem that often occurs in many people, that is, whenever we think excessively about something, such as what could happen if this happens, what would happen if this doesn’t happen, or why this happened. In a word, an overthinker thinks all kinds of negative thoughts! The main reason for this is the mental state of the person. When an overthinker overthinks, he thinks about why this happened to me or what will happen to me if this happens. Overall, his focus is on the negative side. But an overthinker never looks at solving the problem, how to solve it or what could harm us if it happens. An overthinker never thinks about that, which results in mental stress and brain damage.

Why do we overthink?

Those of us who overthink have a type of negative thought. These negative thoughts are in a type of default mood network. And the function of this default mood network is to control our Stimulus thought, which is a thought that comes to us automatically, meaning the thoughts that come to us without us wanting them or what we think subconsciously are called Stimulus thought, which controls this network of the brain. This is also called a type of hyperactivity, due to which all kinds of negative thoughts or negative thoughts keep coming to the subconscious mind, resulting in overthinking in us. Apart from that, the biggest problem of human being is that we always focus more on negativity. Our mind is divided into two sides, one is the positive mind, the other is the negative mind. We always focus more on the negative mind, it seems that if a person has done ten good deeds and two bad deeds, then instead of paying attention to the good deeds of that person, we study more about his bad deeds, how he did it, why he did it, we consider these. The reason for this is that our brain gives us signals from the negative side most of the time and keeps our negative mind the most active. Because of this, there is a lot of overthinking among us.

What are the harms of overthinking?

Overthinking or excessive thinking affects our brain and causes us mental stress, which is harmful to our health. Overthinking can cause various problems in us, such as –

4. Causes mental stress – Excessive thinking exerts pressure on the brain and as a result, the brain cannot rest, thus causing mental stress.

5. Disturbs sleep – When we think about something all day long, our brain does not get rest, so even when we go to sleep, various thoughts enter the brain, which also disrupts sleep.

6. Increases stress – Due to excessive negative thinking, a lot of fear and anxiety work in the mind of a person, as a result of which stress increases and many other types of physical and mental problems arise.

Is overthinking a habit or normal thinking?

In the context of this question, it can be said that overthinking is not a habit because we all overthink more or less sometimes. However, if this overthinking creates a loop, for example, if it happens repeatedly or if someone overthinks about everything all the time, then it can be called abnormal, which usually turns into a habit.

What causes overthinking?

First of all, we all do overthinking more or less, but if it happens constantly, it can become an abnormal habit, then it can no longer be considered normal. But there are some special reasons why we do this overthinking. One of the most common reasons is Depression. Because when for some reason we are in a situation where it becomes difficult to control our emotions, then due to this excessive emotion, our situation makes us think about various things. And when negative thoughts come to us repeatedly, that is called overthinking. Also, overthinking occurs for Anxiety disorder. Another common reason is OCD – Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, which is a disease that is known as a type of mental illness. Patients with this disease think excessively about something, feel that they did something wrong or after doing something, they feel that they have made a mistake, which can harm them. They also commonly suffer from the problem of overthinking. Sometimes this is also caused by some high-power drugs. Due to the side effects of drugs, the brain is disturbed, which causes this problem.

There are some other common reasons such as –

1. Negative mind – Our negative mind works the most and when we are upset for some reason, our negative mind repeatedly makes us think that when this time will pass, we will get rid of it.

2. Blaming – Blaming ourselves, such as always blaming ourselves for some mistake is a big problem.

3. Why does this happen to me? This kind of thinking, when any danger comes or something bad happens, the subconscious mind repeatedly thinks that why me, why does this happen to me, or will I never be good, etc.

4. Fear of the past – that is, some past event that may have been wrong and repeatedly feeling guilty for that event or fearing that the same mistake may happen again or the same event may happen again.

5. Belittling oneself – This is also a common thing in the case of overthinking when someone repeatedly blames themselves for any work and even belittles themselves, thinking, can I do this or can’t I do it, etc.

What is the way to cure overthinking?

Some methods can be adopted to get cured from overthinking, such as, –

1. It is possible to get cured through regular meditation.

2. If you keep yourself busy with positive work, positivity works in the brain and this can control overthinking.

3. Doing favorite work keeps the mind good, as a result of which you can get rid of all kinds of bad thoughts.

4. It is also possible to get rid of all negative energy from the body by taking deep breaths.

5. Motivation

Finally, this is the main goal of overthinking, although overthinking works more or less in us, the main goal is to be able to get cured from it.
